The bestchance Family Support Services program strives to build confidence, capacity and connections that are responsive to the families’ needs. The programs play a preventative and early intervention role by providing professional family assessment, personalised in home support and supported playgroup programs for families with young children.
Community Support Program
Many families experience crisis at different times in their lives. For some families it is financial – eviction from their home for rent, a large gas bill, the washing machine breaking down or medical bills, for some it is an emotional crisis relating to relationship breakdown, isolation or illness in the family.
The Community Support Program aims to support these individuals and families to alleviate the crisis by talking through the key issues, then prioritising and addressing the immediate needs in a proactive client focused manner. A key goal of the program is to develop strategies and skills in partnership with our clients, which empowers them to manage similar issues in the future.
- Material aid
- Food vouchers
- Utility bill payments
- School related expenses
- Wishing Tree (toys and food vouchers) once yearly in December
- Information, advocacy and referral
Wishing Tree supports families at Christmas, relieving anxiety when the budget is already stretched by providing a gift, which the parents give as their own to their children.
In Home Parent and Child Support
This program aims to support families facing challenging circumstances, such as social isolation, limited community involvement, single parenthood, multiple births, anxiety or depression, or a family member with a disability.
The aim of the program is to reduce social isolation and the stresses associated with parenting young children by providing opportunities for parents to become more socially active and to develop support networks within the community. The family is visited by a bestchance volunteer once a week over a six to twelve month period, the volunteer offers emotional and practical support.
“bestchance was just that. It was the best chance a first time mother of twins could have to successfully navigate through the early challenges of motherhood. The program gave me respite once a week with a volunteer who provided emotional and physical assistance to make my day a little easier.” –Parent Participant
This program is available to families with babies and preschool aged children. The focus is to provide a link between home and the community, supporting caregivers who are isolated, adjusting to the demands of parenting and are wanting to meet new people.
Supported Playgroup offers a caring and supportive environment for parents and preschool aged children, provided by the Supported Playgroup Facilitator and a team of volunteers. Emotional support and social connection is provided in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment. An appropriate play program is provided to meet children’s developmental needs with a variety of activities and experiences.
“My children love the playgroup, especially the outdoor play area. I have been going to the playgroup now for over a year and it was the best thing that ever happened for me.” -Parent Participant
