Kindergartners love patterns. Or should I say “pat-ter-ens.” They’re super fun! But what they don’t know is that they are an essential building block in their understanding about numbers. What starts out in kindergarten as making pretty designs with pattern blocks eventually leads to skip counting, repeated addition (and therefore multiplication and division), algebraic reasoning, and beyond! So it’s important that we provide them with a solid foundation.

The children were very receptive of this concept; as this was an extension of many observations of the group, and have even been taking this concept into different areas of the classroom, continuing to create patterns and identify what type of pattern it is.

Where to from here:

We will continue to develop the interest of pattern making. Talking to the children about identifying the types of patterns that they are making, also encouraging mathematical language to be developed.
