Brandon Park Preschool and Bunnings Notting Hill have partnered together over the past few months, to redevelop the children’s outdoor garden area. This provided a wonderful opportunity for children to engage in meaningful learning relationships, provide sensory and exploratory experiences and broaden their learning of local community services. Children thoroughly enjoyed filling their new raised garden beds with soil and planting a variety of vegetables and herbs with the team from Bunnings. As part of this community project, Bunnings kindly donated a variety of shrubs, raised garden beds, soil & seedlings. “This project encourages the children to care for plants, learn about sustainability and instills in them the importance of nurturing and respecting their environment”, said Lisa Cameron, 4 year old group teacher.
This community engagement was timely placed in relation to the preschool program, as currently, the 4 year old group children have been learning about the life cycle of plants and participating in experiments of planting seeds and watching them germinate at different rates. “Offering children the chance to be involved in gardening has so many benefits including the development of confidence, independence, resilience, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Children are born curious, seek to learn about new concepts and approach the natural world with wonder and awe”, said Ms Cameron.
We would like to thank Bunnings for their generous donation to our preschool community and look forward to working together again in the future.
